Tsaluna Trek

The 4 days Bhutan hiking (Tsaluna Trek) is also one of the short Bhutan trekking routes. This 4 days Bhutan hiking is popular with those who wish to do a shorter version of the Druk Path trek and also features an in-depth cultural tour. The Tsaluna trek offers beautiful views as you cross the chain of mountains that separate the Paro and Thimphu valleys. This route is also famous for its spectacular rhododendron forests and wonderful high altitude lakes abundant with fish.

Sketch Itinerary for 4 Days Bhutan Hiking:

Day 01. Arrive Paro:


Rinpung Dzong.

Meet and Greet at the airport and drive to the Hotel.

In the afternoon, visit to:

  • Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower, which now houses the National Museum.
  • Rinpung Dzong built in the 17th century by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This fort serves as the center of civil and religious authority in this valley.

In the evening, explore Paro market.

Dinner and over night in Hotel.

Day 02. Paro – Hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang):


Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang) Monastery.

In the morning, hike to:

  • Spectacular Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang).

In the afternoon, visit to:

On the way back, visit to:

  • Kichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Bhutan built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan King Srongsen Gampo.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 03. Paro – Jele Dzong:


Jele Dzong.

In the morning, drive to Damchena and start the trek.

We start the walk from Damchena to Jele Dzong. It is an uphill walk for 3-4 hours. You can see the great view of Paro valley below.

Just above the camp are the Jele La Pass (3400 m) and Jele Dzong.

Trek distance 8 km, 3 hours. 1090 m ascent.

Dinner and overnight in camp. (Campsite at Altitude: 3480 m).

Day 04. Jele Dzong – Jangchulakha:

A short climb through the Rhododendron forest with great views of Mt. Jumolhari and other peaks.

Walking distance: 10 km, 3 – 4 hours, 310 m ascent, 50 m descent):

Dinner and overnight in camp. Campsite Altitude: 3770 m.

Day 05. Jangchulakha – Jimilangtsho:


Jimilangtsho Lake.

Today, half of your trek will be up hill and another half will be downhill. After a short descent, we arrive at Jimilangtsho Lake (3,700 m).

Distance 11 Km; walking time 4 hours, (330 m ascent, 230 m descent).

Dinner and overnight in Camp. Campsite at Altitude: 3700 m;

Day 06. Jimilangtsho – Tshaluna (End of Trek) – Thimphu (9 km- 4 hours):

We walk downhill today following and crisscrossing a stream till Tshaluna. Packed lunch will be served. Your vehicle will pick you up at Tshaluna and drive you to Thimphu. Relax in the hotel.

In the evening, explore Thimphu market.

Dinner and overnight at Hotel.

Day 07. Thimphu sightseeing:


National Memorial Chorten.

In the morning, visit to:

  • National Memorial Chorten (1974) built in honor of the Late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
  • Dupthop Lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.
  • National Library, stocked with ancient Buddhist manuscripts.
  • Painting School where traditional art is still kept alive through instructions in the art of painting Thangkas.

In the afternoon, visit to:

  • Tallest Statue of Buddha in the world (51.5 m).
  • Witness Archery Match at Changlimithang.

In the evening, visit to:

Tashichho Dzong, seat of the national government and the Central Monastic Body.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 08. Thimphu – Punakha – Thimphu (76 Km, 3 hrs drive):


Dochu La pass (3100 m).

In the morning, drive to Punakha via Dochu La pass (3100 m).

  • We stop for a while at Dochu La pass to view Higher Himalayas.

Drive further to Punakha. On the way, visit to:

  • Chimi Lhakhang, which was built in 1499 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as “The Divine Madman”. The Temple is also known as “the Temple of Fertility”.

In the afternoon, visit to Punakha Dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

In the evening, drive back to Thimphu.

Day 09. Thimphu – Paro (Departure):

After breakfast, drive to the airport and farewell.
