This 10 nights / 11 days Bhutan tour of Central Bhutan is very popular. Discover the spiritual and cultural hub of Bhutan with visits to Ogen Choling Palace in Bumthang to the Burning Lake or Mebar Tsho. Festivals in Bumthang are year round events. Besides Bumthang, you will also visit important sites in western Bhutan like the Tiger’s nest, Imperial Khamsung Yulley including beautiful valleys like Phobjikha.

Sketch Itinerary for 11 Days Bhutan Tour:

Day 1. Arrive Paro – Thimphu (54 kms, 1 hour drive):

Tamchog-Lhakhang

Tamchog Lhakhang.

Your Guide will receive you at the Airport and drive to Thimphu.

  • View Tamchog Monastery built by Thangthong Gyalpo, a wonder working saint, popularly known as the Inron Bridge Builder (1385 – 1464).
  • Tashichho Dzong, seat of the national government and the Head Quarter of Central Monastic Body.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 02. Thimphu sightseeing:

In the morning, we visit:

  • Memorial Chorten built in honor of Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and for the World Peace.
  • Largest Statue of Sitting Buddha (51.5 m).
  • Zorig Chusum or the Painting School.
  • Folk Heritage Museum.

In the afternoon,

  • National Postal Museum.
  • Dupthop Lhakhang, one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.
  • Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Thimphu.
  • Sangaygang view point.
  • Takin Preserve center (A very unique animal).

In the evening, visit to the Craft Bazaar and free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 03. Thimphu – Punakha (76 kms, 2 hour drive):

Dochu La pass (3100 m).

After breakfast, drive to Punakha and visit:

  • The Pass at Dochula with 108 stupas.
  • Rhododendron Garden at Lamperi.
  • The Temple of Fertility or Chimi Lhakhang built in the 15th Century by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as “The Divine Madman”.

After lunch, visit to:

  • Majestic Punakha Dzong built in the 17th century by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Punakha Dzong is the winter residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan.

In the evening, enjoy the walk across the Longest Suspension bridge in Bhutan (160 m).

Day 04. Punakha – Gangtey (66 km, 1 ½ hrs):

Khamsung Yulley Namgyal Choling Monastery.

After breakfast, hike to the Imperial Khamsun Yulley Namgyal Choling Monastery. This was built by Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck.

We drive to Gangtey.

Upper part of the valley is called Gangtey and Lower part is called Phobjikha.

Enroute sightseeing in the valley of Wangdiphodrang includes:

  • Wangdiphodrang Dzong built in 1638, destroyed by fire in 2012 and is under repair now.
  • Gangtey Gompa Monastery built in the 17th century by Tenzin Legpai Dhendup.
  • Black necked Cranes Information centre.
  • Explore Phobjikha valley, the roosting ground of the Rare Black necked Cranes in winter.

Day 05: Gangtey – Trongsa – Bumthang (165 kms, 4 hour drive):

After breakfast, drive to Bumthang. On the way, we visit:

  • Trongsa Dzon built in 1644 by Chogyal Minjur Tempa.

In the afternoon, visit to:

  • The Tower of Trongsa or Ta Dzong which has been converted to the Royal Heritage Museum.

Day 06. Bumthang Sightseeing (Altitude 2800 m):

After breakfast, visit to:

  • Jakar Dzong, which literally means “The Castle of White Bird” and built in 1667.
  • Jambay Lhakhang built in 659 AD by the King Srongsen Gampo of Tibet. In October, one of the most spectacular festivals, “Jambay Lhakhang Drup” is staged here.
  • Kurjey Lhakhang where you can see the body print of Guru Rimpoche on a Rock and Tamshing Lhakhang established in 1501 by Pema Lingpa.

In the evening, visit to Membarstho which literally means, “The Burning Lake”. The Terton Pema Lingpa discovered the treasures hidden by Guru Rimpoche in the 14th century.

Day 07. Bumthang – Excursion to Ura valley (51 kms.):

After breakfast, explore Tang valley.

  • Visit to the Ogyen Choling Palace Museum.
  • Explore the Nyes or Guru Rimpoche.

After lunch, drive back to Bumthang.

  • Cheese factory and Kencho Sum Lhakhang.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 08: Bumthang – Paro sightseeing (Domestic flight):

Rinpung Dzong.

After breakfast, drive to Badbalathnag airport and fly to Paro.

After lunch, we visit:

  • The Watch tower of Paro or the Ta Dzong built in1656 and which now houses the National Museum of Bhutan.
  • Paro Dzong built in the 17th century by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 09. Paro Sightseeing – Hike to the Tiger’s Nest:

After breakfast, drive to Satsam chorten.

  • Hike to Taktsang Monastery for 2 hour walk till the monastery which 2 hours walk – one way.

  • The ruined fortress of Drukgyal built in the 17th century by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
  • Oldest temple of Bhutan, Kichu Lhakhang built in 659 A.D by Srongtsen Gampo of Tibet.

Day 10. Paro – Excursion to Chelila pass:

After breakfast, drive to the Chele La Pass (3820 m)

  • This pass is on the way to the Haa Valley. The view from this pass is scenic.

Packed lunch will be served.

  • On the way, back visit to the Kila Gompa nunnery, one of the oldest nunnery in Paro.

In the evening, explore the Paro market.
